The role: R&D Process Engineer


Who are you?

Svante is a rapidly growing clean energy technology company making commercial-scale carbon capture and removal a reality and enabling global industries to play offense in the fight against climate change by reversing the flow of carbon.

The Process Engineer is responsible to plan and direct test plans for Svante’s demonstration and pilot plants and monitor and analyze operational data for process and operational improvement, material degradation and failure mode analysis. The engineer assists the design of adsorbent beds, process cycle, dynamic valve concept and balance of plant. He or she is also expected to be involved in all phases of a capture plant process, from new application evaluation to process development and design, commissioning, initial start-up and operation.


Key Responsibilities:

To perform this role successfully, the individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Develop test plans and work in close cooperation with Operations to execute.
  • Analyze collected operating data and generate operating performance curves. Prepare reports and updates on a regular basis on plant KPIs and communicate with stakeholders.
  • Troubleshoot and coordinate operational or equipment-related problems which may affect the results.
  • Develop tools and templates for data analysis and integration with data management projects.
  • Provide feedback to R&D teams to improve the TSA cycle efficiency, bed lifetime and rotary valve design.
  • Provide feedback to design and development teams to improve the plant efficiency or operations.
  • Participate in process development and design activities. Apply the principles of mass, momentum and heat transfer to process and equipment design. Work closely with process, mechanical, and electrical engineers to develop PFD and P&IDs.
  • Participate in process hazard and operability analysis (HAZOP) and assess the safety and environmental impact of the plant.
  • Carry out other related tasks and projects as required.
  • Traveling to plant sites of ~5% annually is anticipated.


Key Qualifications:

  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in gas separations related process development and design. Experience in plant operations, data analysis and troubleshooting a plus.
  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • Working knowledge of computer aided-design equipment and computerized processes such as Aspen Hysys is required.
  • Experience in Python, Matlab and/or SEEQ is an asset.
  • Knowledge on instruments and LabVIEW programming is an asset.
  • Solid fundamentals on heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
  • Knowledge or training on chemical process equipment and operations, process control and safety.
  • Knowledge of gas adsorption phenomena and PSA/TSA process preferred.
  • Experience in FEED studies and Techno-Economic Assessments is an asset.
  • Ability to work well with cross-functional teams and diverse groups of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in establishing cooperative working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  • Critical thinking skills and good judgment.
  • Adaptable to change.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
